So you just bought the newest, hottest router on the market, huh? You’ve set it up, and now you’re getting blazing internet speeds, but when you try to watch TV, you realize your phone’s Harmony app can’t connect to your Harmony hub anymore.
This was my exact situation last weekend. I upgraded my router from a 6th generation Apple Airport Extreme to a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 tri-band router . I created a meticulous plan for porting my devices over to the new network…or so I thought. As it turned out, I overlooked several devices, with the Logitech Harmony hub being one of them.
The problem I ran into is how the two routers broadcast their SSIDs (wireless network names) for the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. The Apple Airport Extreme broadcasts a single SSID for both bands by default, then intelligently connects devices to the appropriate network. The Nighthawk broadcasts both the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz bands separately. Although it’s possible to give both bands the same name and password during setup, you won’t know which SSID you are connecting to. I actually tried this, and it did indeed cause confusion because I didn’t know if I was on the 2.4 Ghz network or the 5 Ghz network. In the end, I set the Nighthawk to broadcast two SSIDs, myWifiNetworkName and myWifiNetworkName 2.4 Ghz.
It’s important to know that the Logitech Harmony hub will only connect to the 2.4 Ghz band, because it doesn’t have a 5 Ghz radio. My first attempt to reconnect my hub was to set up a new hub using the instructions provided by the Harmony Android app. Even after connecting my phone to the 2.4 Ghz network, the app couldn’t find the hub during the network scan. I tried this several times with no luck.
Changing Harmony Ultimate Home WiFi Networks
Here’s the solution that ultimately worked for me. First, if you don’t have the MyHarmony desktop software, you’ll need to download it from here (for the Harmony Ultimate Home). Once you have it installed, follow the slideshow below.
Tap or click to start slideshow.
Next select the hub you want to connect to your network.
Click “More”.
Logitech gives you a splash page that gives you all the instructions you’ll need. Connect your remote to your computer via a USB cable.
Select your WiFi network from the list, then enter your password.
You’ll now see “Connected” next to your wireless network. Click “Done”.
It’ll take a minute or two for the new information to be downloaded to your remote. Click “Finish” when you’re done. Your hub is now connected to your new router and your Harmony app will work again.
